La Vela

This is without a doubt my favorite restaurant in Rome, and I&#39;ve lived here 10 years. The owner/chef/server/manager of the restaurant is a man in his 70&#39;s who works a good 14 hours a day, 6 days a week, and he does it all for love. He simply loves what he does and you can taste the love in every morsel. It&#39;s not for gluten free or anything like that. It&#39;s not for those seeking an extensive wine list, a gorgeous setting, or even an english speaker to explain the dishes. On the contrary, other tables get involved to help out if there are questions, because anyone that goes there regularly is part of the family. It is a place where the regulars are diehard loyal, and they tend to be people with big hearts who love simple but elegant plate-licking dishes. What do I recommend? Anything, though the first courses are my favorites, particularly pasta with mussels, beans and tomato sauce, spaghetti with scampi and tomato sauce, spaghetti with clams, the amatriciana, and of course the homemade gnocchi can&#39;t be beat. As for second courses I love the fish encrusted in potatoes while my man loves the fried calimari with artichokes. If you are lucky you can try his homemade limoncello (which he makes in his native Sardinia every summer) - the only limoncello I&rsquo;ve ever loved and of course the Luiga - an amaro that he makes from a strange bitter plant - is the perfect end to any meal. He makes all the desserts as well, including a mean tiramisu. Go while it lasts and go with love.
